How to keep a workout log

“What weight did I use last time?” is a good reason to start keeping a record that remembers.

Strength training: one set per row

Record sets separately when the weight or reps change. Otherwise, a note such as “3 × 10” may leave you wondering whether that was the plan or what you completed.

The fictional entry below illustrates a format. It is not a workout programme or a recommendation for how much to lift.

SetWeightReps
140 kg10
240 kg9
335 kg10

Choose a convention and keep it

Use a clear exercise name and a consistent way to record load. If you log the weight of one dumbbell, do not silently switch to the combined pair. Distinguish different machines or exercise variations.

Training volume can be calculated as the sum of weight multiplied by reps. That describes the recorded load; it does not prove workout quality. Different movements, technique and ranges of motion are not interchangeable just because the totals match.

Give cardio its own measurements

For a walk, run or ride, record the actual time and distance when known. Do not present an unknown distance as a measured one. Check the units before saving.

Sanvimo lets you enter cardio minutes and metres manually. A diary entry does not mean the app tracked your route or imported watch data. Cardio logging is free.

The plan is an intention; the log is what happened

A planned session can change: less time, a different exercise or fewer sets. Your history is most useful when it reflects what you actually completed.

Sanvimo includes personal exercises, templates, programmes and a schedule. Free supports up to three active programmes of your own and single-week scheduling. Detailed strength charts and period comparisons belong to Pro.

What to look at next time

Open your previous entry for the same exercise. Review weights, reps and the sequence of sets. Take breaks, conditions and exercise changes into account when comparing sessions.

A log helps you remember your history. It does not prescribe load or require an increase every session. Discuss programming and safety with a qualified coach, and medical restrictions with a clinician.
